ABOUT The Tangled Web
On December 20, 1973,
Richard Cain walked into Rose's sandwich shop on West Grand Avenue in
Chicago for the last time. As he entered, two masked gunmen silently
shoved him against the wall. One placed a double-barreled shotgun under
his chin, and discharged both chambers. Thus ended the career of a man
whom FBI Special Agent Bill Roemer once called, "possibly the most
corrupt police official in the history of Chicago."
Cain's
bloody death was the logical result of his improbably dangerous double
life, one that seems to come right from the plot of Martin Scorsese's
hit move The Departed. As a Chicago Police Detective and
chief investigator for the Cook County Sheriff's Department, Cain had
led notable raids against gambling establishments and had acted as head
of the security detail for visiting dignitaries. Simultaneously, he was
a "made" Mafia soldier and protege and informer for legendary mob boss
Sam Giancana. He tipped off the mob to potential arrests, forewarned
vice establishments before shutting them down, and used his knowledge of
the mob to become seemingly indispensable to law enforcement. He was
even said to be involved in the CIA plot to assassinate Fidel Castro and
was fingered as one of the mob hit men involved in the assassination of
John F. Kennedy -- an allegation that Michael Cain conclusively
addresses here for the first time.
In The Tangled Web,
Richard Cain's half-brother Michael weaves years of research,
interviews, family anecdotes, and rare documents to create a
comprehensive biography of a criminal genius who played both ends agains
the middle and became a household name in Chicagoland.
